What You Need to Know About Dental Crowns

← Back to Blog

There is a solution to saving your damaged, chipped, broken, or decaying teeth. NW Calgary dental crown services allow you to protect, reshape, and strengthen teeth that have naturally chipped away, or been in an accident. Crowns can be placed on teeth no matter what your age is so you can start restoring your smile today.

What is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a covering that goes over your natural tooth as a restorative procedure. This type of cosmetic dentistry can:

  • Keep your teeth looking aligned
  • Give you a confidence boost
  • Enhance your appearance
  • Aid in other dental procedures
  • Give you full functionality for everyday things like eating and speaking

You only need to take care of your dental crown by brushing it with a soft-bristled toothbrush with toothpaste and water just like your regular teeth. Did you know a crown can last for 10+ years?

What is the Dental Crown Procedure?

This procedure will typically need two dental appointments. On the initial visit, your dentist will examine the tooth and take a mould so the crown can be formed. You will require a second appointment to fit it.

Step 1: Checks In Place - First, your teeth and gums will be checked for severity of decay to determine if a root canal is necessary before the procedure.

Step 2: Preparation – Your tooth will need to have some enamel removed to allow proper fitting of the crown. This will be done with a dental drill. If there is not enough tooth remaining, then your dentist will use filling material inside it and to shape it.

Step 3: Impression – A dental impression is made so the shape is optimum for the inside of your mouth. This is done with paste, putty, or a digital scanner.

Step 4: Temporary Crown – A temporary crown will be placed on your tooth until the permanent crown has been made at a dental lab.

Step 5: Permanent Placement – When the permanent crown is ready you will go back to the dentist, get the temporary crown off, and have the new one fitted over your tooth. Dental cement is used in this part of the process. Your dentist will check to make sure it functions with your bite and movement to ensure the utmost comfort.

You can move your mouth freely once more and enjoy your favourite meal!

  • Save Money – Save $$$ by saving your tooth from further chipping or fracturing thanks to the support of a crown. There may be no need for additional dental services with a dental crown to save your tooth/teeth.
  • Improved Oral Health – When your teeth have support, they are less likely to shift around and cause a crooked smile. Furthermore, avoiding further tooth decay means less chance of gum disease.

When Might You Need a Dental Crown?

There are signs of needing a dental crown before your next dental visit. You can keep watch inside your mouth for:

  • Broken, fractured teeth
  • Holes or dark spots on your teeth
  • Sensitivity and pain
  • Brittle teeth
  • Flat teeth
  • Discoloured teeth

These are all things a dental crown can fix.

What to Avoid After Getting a Dental Crown

Your dentist will provide you with a list of instructions to follow carefully for 24 hours after treatment. This helps to avoid any incidents of damage or movement of your new crown.

  • No Eating or Drinking - You may have chosen to receive anesthetic during treatment, so it is recommended to stay away from food and drink until the numbness is completely gone. This prevents you from accidentally biting your tongue or drinking something too hot.
  • Floss Lifting – Glide the floss off of your tooth instead of lifting it off, preventing the crown from lifting or coming loose.

If you notice anything strange or have discomfort, it is important to contact the dentist right away.

Crown Placement

A crown needs love and care just like your other teeth. Make sure to maintain a regular hygiene routine and visit the dentist at least twice a year for check-ups and cleanings. Your dentist may see things before you do so these appointments are a crucial step in the upkeep of an oral appliance of any kind. At Northmount Dental Care, we provide you with the utmost comfort for your NW Calgary dental crown services.
